Make sure you have considered all the impact for the claim as it is very rarely that you will be able to claim for additional, overlooked losses at a later stage. When to contact the police In the case of a crime it is essential to inform the police straight away. In addition your insurer will require a crime reference number to process this type of claim. It is important, from the outset, to keep records and gather all the evidence you can to back up your account of events. For example you should keep receipts for work carried out, correspondence notes, details of telephone conversations and visits, photographs of damage and proof of purchase for items damaged. You may need to fill in a claims form so that you can begin your claim. Your insurance provider should provide you with this and having all of the evidence listed above will help greatly with filling in the form. Alternatively many insurance companies are happy to talk through your claim over the phone.
